Jim Cramer

Jim Cramer is an American financial television presenter. He is on CNBC as the “Mad Money” host and also has a radio show called "Real money with Jim Cramer". He was born in Pennsylvania in 1955 and originally began his trading career by selling ice cream at the Veterans Stadium! He studied at Harvard graduating in 1977 and acquired a further degree in 1984 and went to work for Goldman Sachs.

Jim Cramer started his own hedge fund company in 1987 and managed to achieve a compound return of over 20% for the succeeding 13 years. He left the business to his partner Jeff Berkowitz in 2000 to pursue a career in financial journalism. He is one of the founders of the Street.com and has presented many financial programs and reviews that have been syndicated throughout the US.

Some of Jim Cramer's financial advice runs contrary to popularly held beliefs, such as his opinion that people should not hold more than five different stocks due to the fact that they will not have time to research them properly. He also suggests that people use around a fifth of their funds on speculative ventures in the stock market, as he believes that one good profit will outweigh any losses accrued.

Jim Cramer writes columns for several publications both online and offline and his tips are so well received by his audience, that when he gives a tip it sometimes creates what is referred to as the “Jim Cramer bounce“. This is because when he includes a stock, it is bought by so many people that that in itself can cause the price of the stock to rise.

Although many analysts accept this as an effect of Jim Cramer’s tips, he himself does not think that is an acceptable business method and believes that it demonstrates a lack of research on the part of those that rely on it.

Jim Cramer has an interesting style of presenting his mad money show. Occasionally when a caller talks for longer than he thinks is appropriate, he pulls out a blanket and pretends to go to sleep for a while. He also has a habit of throwing a chair across the studio and his book in the air.

Although he is a very popular media stock market analyst, Jim Cramer is not universally popular within the financial sector. But there is no denying his popularity among small stock market investors and his tips are widely followed and many people make a good return on their investment from them.
