Welcome to part 4 of the seven part auto-course
Scan 2
* True Momentum Stocks–This screen looks
for the top performing stocks in the
top performing industry groups. These
stocks have relative price strength of
99 (the highest possible), group strength
of A, accumulation-distribution
rating of A, volume of at least 100,000 in
the past week and average daily
volume of at least 25,000.
Scan 3
* Speculative Momentum Breakouts–Criteria is
price 15 or less; at least 1 million volume
on the week; new high and up for the week;
at least four weeks since the
stock’s previous high; and volume at least
two times the previous week’s
volume.
Scan 4
* Illiquid Momentum Breakouts–Same criteria as
Midget Breakouts except volume
requirement is lowered to at least 500,000
on the week.
Scan 5
* High-Volume Breakouts–This screen ups
the volume bar and catches the rest
of the truly significant breakouts.
Qualifiers have at least 2 million volume
on the week; new high and up for the week;
at least four weeks since the
stock’s previous high; and volume at least
two times the previous week’s
volume.
All these basic screens also share the
following criteria:
* Ratio between 52-week high and 52-week
low of at least 2-1.(CPM on the screener)
* Price within 20% percent of the stock’s
52-week high.
* Float of 15 million shares or less.
( you must check Yahoo’s financial page for this stat)
* Not in the middle of a merger.
Scan 6
For larger capitalization stocks, I take a
different tack with my Super 10
Big Caps screen. It looks for stocks which
are up or down $10 in a single
week and are also in the top 25 in the
Nasdaq, NYSE or AMEX in either share
or dollar volume. Some of the huge winners
of 1995-2000 such as AOL, AMZN,
DELL, EBAY, JDSU, QCOM and YHOO showed up
on this list early in their moves
up, and it also caught them on the way
down.
Scan 7
Shorting Stocks:
Stocks within 20% of New High (or five year high,
or 1 year high)
Price >$40
Cap >2.0bn
Volume >250,000
Options - preferable
CPM >2.0
P/E >40
As you can see there are many different paramaters to play
around with when using Momentum Stock Screener.
With the trashing the Nasdaq has taken the
past three years, another winning
approach has been to look for beaten-down,
high-volume, high-beta, low-priced
stocks, particularly in the tech sector,
when the market is in BUY mode. This
type of stock will often make my Momentum
Movers screen, which looks for stocks
priced below 10 that are up at least 1
point on the week with weekly trading
volume of at least 10 million.
It doesn’t take any great effort to do
these screens. They can be done in an
hour or two a week, using information from
Investors Business Daily, and the Momentum Stock
Screener (in the secure members’ area). All you need
is to purchase M.S.T.S. and gain your FREE access to
the members area and search away.
These screens usually identify about 10-20
new companies each week depending
on market conditions. To narrow the small
cap list down, I run the stocks
through two additional advanced screens.
* Super 7 Stocks. These meet ALL the
following 7 criteria.
– Relative strength of 97 or higher or
C.P.M. of 4 to 1 or better.
– Price less than 30 or more than 50.
– Float 10 million shares or less.
– New high in the previous two weeks.
– A 3x-previous-day-volume-and-up-in-
price day in past two weeks.
– A breakout out of a base of four weeks
or longer in the past two weeks.
Only about 10-20% of the stocks which meet
my screens will also meet this
screen, and a larger share of big winners
make this screen.
Another Screen I like:
The second screen of screens is RS99
Breakouts, which looks for stocks that
make either the Low Price Momentum screen
or Baddest of the Bad screen and
also make one of the three breakout
screens in the same week. Again, this
screen greatly cuts down the number of
stocks and still retains focus on some
top winners.
And another:
The third advanced screen I focus
attention on is the Low Price Momentum
(RS99-15) screen. As mentioned earlier,
this has consistently been my best
performing screen, and it also doesn’t
generally spit out that many picks.
All stocks in the Momentum Screener which make
your "to watch list" are listed with
the following information: Stock Symbol,
Name of Company, Current Price,
52-week High and Low, Industry Group and
Description of Business.
That completes Part 4 of the

Next we talk about money management. One of my favourite
topics and proably the most important aspect of managing a
superior stock portfolio. You do not want to miss what I have
to say about money management.
